Mathematics pervades all aspects of our lives and helps us to make sense of our world. At St. Margaret’s, we have a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. Mastering mathematics means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. A Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach is advocated in all year groups to enable pupils to gain a deep and secure understanding of concepts before the learning is built upon in manageable steps. This means all children will use physical objects (such as counters or base ten equipment) and pictures to build their understanding before moving onto solving problems involving only numbers. Central to this approach is the belief that every child can succeed. We want all pupils at St. Margaret’s to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding.
